Black-and-white test: a controlled physical comparison
Use it for faint documents, muddy photos, tinted grays, weak toner coverage, clogged black nozzles, or text that looks soft and feathered.
What to inspect on paper
- The 2% and 5% highlight steps remain just visible against paper.
- Dark steps from 80% through 100% remain distinguishable.
- Solid black areas are even rather than mottled or striped.
- Small serif, sans-serif, and monospaced samples retain open counters.
What a clean result looks like
- Grays look neutral under consistent light.
- Diagonal hatching and fine rules remain separate.
- Black text has crisp edges without halos or satellite dots.
What the result does not prove
- Composite black can carry a color tint even when the black channel is healthy.
- Economy mode intentionally lowers density.
- Paper absorbency can make inkjet text appear softer.
The sheet is the diagnostic instrument.
